AGE OF THE PARTICIPANTS:
Boys and girls, from 12 to 20 years old.
Younger students may attend the program (we suggest only 1 or 2 weeks program) but they have to be in Barcelona with their own parents or tutors.
MORE ABOUT THE HOST FAMILY ACCOMMODATION:
Carefully selected Spanish host family accommodation. All our host families are supervised by the School and have been working with us for several years. Our host families are well educated and polite people that will offer a warm and kind envoirement to the student.
Daily breakfast and dinner are with the host family. Laundry (1 or 2 per week) is included.
Our host families will offer a warm envoirement and take good care of our students.
According to your preferences students can be placed alone or with 1 or 2 more students at the same host family accommodation.
There are some host families that can accommodate 3 or 4 students at the same time.
We always try to place the students with family with children or according to the students' preferences.
Most of the host families live short walking distance from the School and always in the center of the city in some of the most safe parts and nice and residential areas.
All participants of the Youth Summer Programs have a curfew (11:30 pm) that must be respected.
CURFEW:
This program has a curfew for all participants.
Especially those who are younger in the group can not go out after the curfew and this rule will be stricly enforced by the school and the host family.
** Those parents or guardians who want to permit their children to go out after the curfew have to send to the school a formal permission slip before the student can go out.
Some activities may be organized at night with the school or with the host family. The school and the host family won't be resposible for the students
who go out without their supervision.
CLOTHES TO BRING:
Summer is very warm in Barcelona, students should bring summer clothes. Participants have to bring just their spring and summer clothes, casual wear: in June and July temperature can be between 24º and 29º Celsius (68 and 78 Farenheit), hot during the day and warm during the night.
Remember to bring the swimming suit, towel and sunscream for the beach days.
The host families provide the student/s with any towels, sheets and pilows needed.
Students have at SpainBCN school any material they need for the Spanish lessons and all information about the city.
It's not necessary to bring any first aid medicine (except in the case the student needs anything special).
If you have a question regarding to bring any special item, please ask us.
DOCUMENTATION AND SHOTS:
You will need a current passport to be in Europe (or just your identification if you are an European citizen).
For United States and Canada: No visa is required for this period in Spain .
Participants from other countries: Please check with the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country.
Check with your doctor to see what shots you might want to consider. None are required.
We always recommend keeping your tetanus booster current.
DO I NEED A MEDiCAL INSURANCE?:
Those students who are from the European Union won't need any special medical insurance as it will work the same that works in their countries.
For those participants from a non European Union country a trip insurance is recommended.
These participants (from a non European Union country) will have to have an insurance that covers them while traveling in Europe in case they want to reduce any possible expenses from any medical assistence they may need while in Spain. If that is your case, a travel insurance is an essential purchase on any overseas trip.
UPON ARRIVAL AT THE BARCELONA AIRPORT...
A few days before your arrival in Barcelona you will receive the name, picture and phone number of the SpainBcn representative that will be waiting for you at the Barcelona airport. In the reception area we will be with a big sign with the SpainBcn logo and the student's name.
The name and description of the person waiting for you at the airport will be provided 1 week before your arrival date in Barcelona.
We are in constant communication with airline flight arrival information. In case the flight arrives earlier or later than the scheduled arrival time we will be there when the plane arrives at Barcelona.
In the rare case when a student may miss a connection enroute to Barcelona SpainBcn will make sure someone is at the airport when the student arrives.
In any case, the student is to stay near the entrance of the reception area until the SpainBcn representative arrives.
The SpainBcn representative that meets the student at the airport will drive the student to the host family accommodation and introduce the student to the family.
That first day the students also receive maps and directions and other information they need: phone numbers and addresses of the school, of the host family and of other students/friends also in Barcelona.
FIRST DAY OF PROGRAM:
The first day of program the host family accompanies the student to the school or a teacher or coordinator of the school will go to pick the student up.
Our our host families live in the same area of the school between 5 to 20 minutes walking distance from the school. This is also the central area of the city, with wide sidewalks and lots of shops.
CURFEWS:
This is a supervised program. Those students under 18 will have a curfew that will be strictly enforced.
* Students under 18 are not allowed to be away from their home in Barcelona overnight (after 11,30).
** Those parents or guardians who want to permit their children to go out after the curfew have to send to the school a formal permission slip.
Some of our host families do not want this situation. In that case, the School may have the option of moving the student with a different host family.
PHONE CALLS FROM SPAIN:
Participants are normally not permitted to make long-distance phone calls directly from their host family's phone or from the School phone.
They have to use a phone card to make those calls. However students' parents may call the participants at the accommodation at specific times. It is also customary to keep calls brief to not interrup to much the family's life.
Student can use any public or private phones with the pre-paid cards (which are very cheap and available in many stores in the city).
Most of the host families have internet at home so students can use their e-mails. They can also use the internet at School.
Students can also receive calls at SpainBCN school and make internationl phone calls from the school's phone using the pre-paid cards.
POCKET/SPENDING MONEY:
We suggest to bring around 70 euros per week for lunch (if needed) or for other minor expenses -approximately 10 euros per day-.
Lunch from Monday through Thursday is at SpainBCN School for those articipants who are 14 year old and younger and it is optional for those older than 14.
In this case students who want to eat at school have to inform us the day before if they are going to have lunch at school the next day.
Those students who choose to have lunch out of school (there are many places with all types of foods and for all budgets in the area and the meal will be at student's own cost) have to stay in the school area and be back at school at 3:30 pm. for the afternoon cultural activity.
A complete menu will cost around 8 euros and more simple meals can be around 5 euros.
The school will prepare a package-lunch or a picnic (big sandwich and drink) for all students on Fridays (beach day) and Saturdays (excursion day).
DO I NEED A MEDiCAL INSURANCE:
Those students who are from the European Union won't need any special medical insurance as it will work the same that works in their countries.
Those participants from a non European Union country will have to have insurance that covers them while traveling in Europe in case they want to reduce any possible expenses from any medical assistence they may need while in Spain. So, a travel insurance is an essential purchase on any overseas trip.
WHEN THE STUDENTS' FAMILIES ARE IN BARCELONA:
If the student's family is traveling to Barcelona with the student, the cost of the host family accommodation will be deducted from the program's prices.
A program that matches as much as possible your preferences can be organized. For exemple not including the day excursion on Saturday or not including the cultural activities in the afternoon.
